Travels on Graham Island, Haida Gwaii

Forestry Tour near Port Clement

Weyerhaeuser Co Ltd offers forestry tours out of Port Clement during the summer.
During it, we visit an abandoned cedar canoe.

No one knows why the canoe was abandoned, or how the Haida intended to transport it to the sea.
It is guessed that the smallpox epidemic introduced by traders into the Haida community killed the carvers.
Below is shown the stump of the cedar tree from which the canoe was cut.
Left: shows the canoe; right: a "culturally modified tree" which was probably rejected in favor of the stump's tree.

Beachcombing at Yakan Point

The waves pound the shore, packing shell shards within rock crevices and smooth stones inside driftwood.

Music Festival at Tlell
The design for this year's festival incorporates the spiral of the ammonite fossil, like Liz's "new" pendant.
The festival starts Friday night under a tent in an open field, and lasts through Sunday - a true community happening.
Most attendees camp out on the grounds all weekend, although we opt for a motel room with a hot shower.
