Summary Log for this Leg (9)

Summary Log for Leg 9: Our San Francisco neighbors Jim and Leena Krasno joined us for this leg. Finnish-born Leena has edited various health-related journals and the definitive book on prions for Dr. Stanley Prusiner, Nobel Laureate. She works for the American Society on Aging. Jim is a practicing pathologist and medical director of several laboratories in the Bay Area. His varied interests include developing a line of clothes originally for use in the morgue and now available for streetwear at Mortuwear.com. Jim grew up sailing small boats in Wisconsin and Leena grew up among mountains. Cruising on a mid-sized power boat was a brand new and exciting experience for both of them.

This leg was characterized by steep learning curves, good kayaking and serendipity. The Krasnos were eager students about everything on board Onward. They became apprentice navigators, using the laptop, Nobeltec software, electronic charts, autopilot. They assisted in anchoring, setting lines and fenders, and lowering and raising the dinghy and kayaks. Because it was the end of August, we could take part in several festivals on San Juan Island: antique airplane and boat shows and a reenactment of life at English Camp during the 1860's. The waters surrounding of the Gulf and San Juan Islands are quite protected, and the weather was benign, so we could cruise and kayak without anxiety. All in all, a fitting “last underway leg” for 2004.

Leg 9 stats: 8 days total, 6 travel days (18.8 hours of motoring averaging 3.1 hours per travel day), 125.3 miles covered at an average speed of 6.7 knots; two nights at the Victoria dock and one at the Fishmerman Bay dock).
