Summary Log - Leg 1

In mid-May, Tom launched Onward in Anacortes for the summer of 2005. He sailed to Fisherman's Bay with his son Eric. Leg 1 officially began when Don and Amber joined Tom on Lopez Island. We, this Onward crew, visited Crowfoot Farm, where Tom’s son Eric and his family grow organic fruits and berries, then toured the island, and provisioned. After leaving Lopez Island, we cleared Canadian Customs and re-visited an old favorite, Butchart Gardens. For the next three days, we explored harbors in the Gulf Islands, then made an early morning crossing of the Strait of Georgia to Vancouver. Highlights included the gardens, visit to a marvelous B&B complete with a huge selection of memorabilia and a six-ton sailboat in the living room, daily dinghy and land explorations, lots of reading and, of course, delightful conversations and meals.

Statistics: 6 days total, 5 travel days (17.8 hours of motoring averaging 3.6 hours per travel day), 113.6 miles covered at an average speed of 6.4 knots; two nights in marinas.
