Summary Log - Leg 4 Summary Leg 4. The leg began on a sad note, a July 18 email saying that Tom’s mother had died that morning. Tom had in fact said his goodbye to her years ago, for his mother had slid into the unknowing of Alzheimers, but death is the final goodbye. We adventured on, up the central coast of BC to Shearwater, then out to Aristazabal Island to await fair weather for the Hecate Strait crossing. Once “on the other side” in Gwaii Haanas, we went down to Rose Harbour than out to SGang Gwaay, the World Heritage Site. This awesome place contains the remains of a fully functioning Haida village, with mortuary and memorial poles and the “bones” of long houses. Then we returned north to Bag Harbour to await the delivery of our next crew by fast inflatable from Sandspit. Memorable were the horror of the massive fish die-off, the disappointment of clearcuts, the delights of kayaking, meeting folks, foam from reversing falls, old growth forests, intertidal creatures, eagles, humpback whales, mink, sea otters and seals, puffins and deer. Leg 4 stats: 16 days total, 12 travel days (53.0 hours of motoring averaging 4.4 hours per travel day), 347.5 miles covered at an average speed of 6.6 knots; 1 night at the Shearwater Marina on Denny Island. |
